A condition known as the pelvic inflammatory disease is an infection of the female reproductive system. Infections are usually caused by bacteria.
The infection could also be caused by an imbalance in uterus normal bacteria, or the introduction of harmful bacteria into the uterus during medical procedures like delivery, abortion, dilation, and curettage.
Inflammation can also occur in the uterus and fallopian tubes, as well as the ovaries. Untreated, the infection can cause irreversible damage to reproductive organs and may lead to severe consequences.
Infertility can often be caused by inflammation from PID in the fallopian tube. This is the leading cause of ectopic pregnancies. It occurs when the fertilized egg cannot make its way into the uterus and becomes stuck in the fallopian tubes.
Ectopic pregnancy can be difficult to spot as symptoms are very similar to normal pregnancy. After the damage is done, infertility treatment will be required for couples trying to conceive.
